July 2010 Restoration Update

During July, the following work was done at the light house by members of TLC and light house personnel:

The mansard roof and shingles have been painted
Interior trim work was added
Plumbing was installed in the bathroom
Additional ceiling lights have been installed
Some bedroom furniture was brought out and placed in the bedrooms

Members of the Bruderhof have been out and helped wash down the upstairs wall from previous construction projects.

In memory of Carol Fletcher

On August 11, 2010, the Esopus Meadows Lighthouse lost a dear friend in Carol Fletcher. She will be missed by everyone at the lighthouse.

At rest August 11, 2010, Carol J. Fletcher of Kingston. She was married to Stanley H. Fletcher. In addition to her husband she is survived by her son Dave and his wife Sharon Fletcher; grandson, Ty R. Fletcher; brothers, Donald and his wife Lorie Burnett, Fredrick and his wife Elaine Burnett, and Robert and his wife Peg Burnett.

Entrusted to the care of the Keyser Funeral Service, Inc., 326 Albany Avenue, Kingston, where services will be held on Monday at 11:00 am at the Keyser Funeral Service, Inc. Friends may call on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M.

10th Annual Save Esopus Lighthouse Regatta - August 21, 2010

This year, the Save Esopus Lighthouse Regatta is once again being hosted by the Poughkeepsie Yacht Club and Norrie Point Sailing Club. This year the race will again be one way with the start at the RR bridge at 10:30AM and finish at PYC.

Help to preserve the last wooden lighthouse on the Hudson River by sailing in the Regatta. Proceeds to benefit the restoration and preservation of the lighthouse. (All proceeds from entry fees donated to the Save the Esopus Lighthouse Commission)

Following the Regatta an awards ceremony with food, refreshments and cash bar will take place at Poughkeepsie Yacht club.

June 2010 Restoration Update

We are making great strides in getting the light house ready for tours. Members of TLC have painted the roof and mansard shingles, worked on the interior trim and installed plumbing in the bathroom.

The Bruderhof members have washed walls and done light carpentry.

The docks and ramp are in place, some ceiling lights have been installed and the bedrooms have some furniture.

Lighthouse tours start July 3, 2010

The Esopus Meadows Lighthouse will open for tours starting July 3, 2010. While the restoration project continues, enough progress has been made to allow people to once again visit. At this time, while we will open for tours, there is still a fair amount of construction material present. People should wear soft shoes, no high heels or open toes will be allowed. Children under 12 will not be permitted at this time.

Tours will depart at 1:00 PM on the following dates:

July 3, 2010
July 17, 2010
July 31, 2010
August 14, 2010
August 28, 2010
September 6, 2010
September 11, 2010
September 25, 2010
October 9, 2010

Cost is $20 per person; $15 with advance payment, $15 for children, and $15 for members. Children under 12 are not permitted at this time. Reservations are recommended and can be made at 845-848-3669.

Installing the new dock

During May 2010, the new dock allowing the Estuary Steward or other larger vessels to dock in deeper water was installed. The photos show the dock being floated into place from its storage & assembly location at the Poughkeepsie Yacht Club. Other pictures show the newly designed and built walkway to get from the dock up to the base in place.

May 2010 Restoration Update

The Esopus Lighthouse crew started restoration work for the 2010 season in May this year. After re-opening the house and making sure all was well over the winter, the following items were accomplished:

Painted the upstairs bedrooms
Installed a new dock for the barge in place of the old one which had too many rotted spots to be worth fixing.
Installed the new “main dock” which will be in deep water for docking the Estuary Steward.
Installed the newly designed and built walkway to get from the new dock to the newly finished base.

Work parties to restore the lighthouse resume May 2, 2010

Its that time of the year when we begin sending work parties out to restore the lighthouse.

The more volunteers we get, the quicker we get done. Plan to come and help.

The barge departs from Norrie Point marina on Sundays and Mondays at 9:00 AM. and returns about 5:00 PM. Wear old clothes, bring your lunch, favorite tools and join the crew.

Last minute confirmation of work schedule will be available on 845-331-4083. The weekend plans will be recorded each Thursday evening and updated should there be a last minute change due to weather or what ever. Check before departing for Norrie. Leave a message if you have questions.

August 2009 Restoration Update

The following items have been completed or nearly completed during the month of August 2009:

Washing of the interior walls to get rid of all the dust from sanding has begun

Staining and varnishing of the 2nd floor bedroom floors has started.

The outside railings have been installed most of the way around the new base. The remaining pieces are being fabricated and will be installed next month.

Prep work on the base has begun to allow the docks to be attached once they are complete.

The remaining outside walls that were not painted in the fall of 2008 have been finished. The window trim will be done next month.

Upcoming jobs:

Paint the tin roof and stain the mansard shingles.
